The Greenville Zoo announced the passing of their beloved African Lion, Saied, at the age of 15. In a statement, the zoo expressed deep sadness as they bid farewell to the iconic animal.

Saied had been receiving treatment for degenerative joint disease and spinal neurological issues, with zoo staff monitoring his health closely through various diagnostic tests. Unfortunately, his condition took a turn for the worse, prompting the difficult decision to euthanize him for his wellbeing.

Saied and his brother Chuma had been residents of the Greenville Zoo since 2010 when they arrived from the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia. Zookeepers and veterinarians are now focusing on supporting Chuma as he copes with the loss of his companion.

Described as the "dominant" male, Saied was known for his intelligence and trainability, even though he was considered "less playful" than Chuma. The lion had a lasting impact on millions of zoo visitors throughout his lifetime, and his absence will be deeply felt.

The Greenville Zoo is currently making arrangements for a remembrance of Saied and is working on ways for the community to express their condolences during this time of mourning.
